COURSE DESCRIPTION The ultimate aim of MEDCHAMPS is to
recommend policy measures and health system interventions for Cardio Vascular
Diseases and diabetes (CVD) that are appropriate and realistic in each partner
country. Although there are some generic recommendations for interventions
concerning CVD and diabetes designed by international bodies, the greatest
challenge is how these interventions may be translated to vastly different
cultural setting. To establish a firm basis on which to draw interventions
and policy recommendations, data that offers both context-specific "depth"
(usually obtained via qualitative/ethnographic methods) and generalisable
"breadth" (usually obtained via quantitative methods) are required. While the other Work
Packages of MEDCHAMPS will generate quantitative data, Work Package 5 will
generate data that are qualitative and ethnographic in nature. Qualitative
and ethnographic data leads us to explore underlying behaviours, attitudes, and
perceptions of people that determine a particular phenomenon; it sheds light on
the success of particular interventions; and facilitates better understanding
of the policy, social and legal contexts in which people make choices. This training workshop will cover both theoretical
and practical aspects of qualitative/ethnographic research methodology with a
focus on MEDCHAMPS
Work Package 5 activities. The two facilitators of this training workshop have
background in social and medical anthropology and are experienced in
integrating ethnography with broader qualitative research methods.
